Falconry is deeply rooted in the identity of Emirati society as one of the most prominent elements of the nation’s intangible cultural heritage and part of the historical relationship between people and their desert environment. Over the centuries, falconry has developed a rich body of knowledge, experience, and values, including an understanding of nature, the ability to read the desert landscape, respect for prey seasons, and the responsible use of environmental resources.

The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul, recognised that preserving falconry extended beyond maintaining the practice itself; it also meant safeguarding the values it represents, foremost among them respect for nature and achieving a balance between people and wildlife. Guided by this vision, the United Arab Emirates adopted a comprehensive approach to developing falconry, combining traditional expertise with scientific knowledge to enhance the sustainability of this cultural legacy for future generations.

The Mohamed Bin Zayed Falconry and Desert Physiognomy School continues this mission through educational programmes that introduce students to the history of falconry, its cultural and environmental dimensions, and its ethical principles, thereby reinforcing awareness that falconry is a civilised practice that carries a responsibility to preserve both heritage and nature.
