The name of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul, has been closely associated with falconry since his early years in the city of Al Ain, where the desert served as a setting for learning patience, endurance, keen observation, and an understanding of nature. He documented part of this experience in his book Falconry as a Sport: Our Arab Heritage, recalling his early experiences with hunting and the deep understanding he developed of this authentic heritage.

Sheikh Zayed’s interest in falconry stemmed not only from personal passion, but also from a firm conviction that it was a school that cultivated moral values, strengthened discipline, and taught people to respect the environment in which they lived. Through his Megnas, this conviction developed into a vision that the sustainability of falconry begins with conserving falcons and their prey and safeguarding the wildlife upon which this practice depends.

Building on this vision, the United Arab Emirates has supported numerous initiatives and institutions that have contributed to protecting heritage and developing falconry in accordance with modern scientific and organisational principles. These principles continue to be reflected today in educational programmes and initiatives that pass this heritage on to new generations, so that Sheikh Zayed’s approach remains alive in the field and in the national memory.
