Adult Academic

The adult Arabian falconry courses develop falconry skills through the handling of falcons with each session comprising of a combination of theory and practical work. The core of each course concentrates on teaching the novice falconer how to handle, train and care for a falcon correctly.

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (RIP) was a pioneering falconer and conservationist. All courses will highlight the efforts of the father of the nation in preserving falconry heritage and establishing a legacy for sustainable hunting and give examples of falconry experiences and skills of the late Sheikh Zayed.

 

Introductory


Eligible students

  • Adults over 18who have an interest in falcons and falconry
  • Adults with no experience of falconry

Knowledge and skills acquired

  • Basic falcon handling and training using traditional techniques
  • Ancient history of falconry in MENA region
  • Knowledge of Sheikh Zayed as a passionate falconer
  • Knowledge of equipment needed
  • Knowledge of falcon species used in traditional Arabian falconry
  • Knowledge of quarry hunted in the UAE
  • Understanding of sustainable hunting

Elementary


Eligible students

  • Adults who have completed the introductory course at MBZFDP School
  • Adults who wish to become practicing falconers
  • Adults who wish to obtain and keep a bird of prey

Knowledge and skills acquired

  • Intermediate falcon handling and training techniques
  • History of world and traditional Arabian falconry
  • Knowledge of Sheikh Zayed as a passionate falconer, hunting trips and sustainable falconry
  • Recognition of falconry by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
  • Understanding of falcon anatomy, feathers and feather care
  • Understanding and applying principles of falcon welfare
  • Advanced knowledge of falcon species used in traditional Arabian falconry
  • Knowledge of quarry species and UAE conservation programmes
  • Falcon conservation programmes and threats faced by falcons
  • Understanding the prerequisites for becoming a falconer
  • Recognising the characteristics of a healthy and sick falcon

Intermediate


Eligible students

  • Adults who have completed the elementary course at MBZFDP School
  • Adults who wish to become practicing falconers
  • Adults who wish to obtain and keep a bird of prey

Knowledge and skills acquired

  • Mastering falcon handling and training techniques
  • Understanding and applying UAE regulations when obtaining a falcon
  • Mastering hunting skills and how to track quarry
  • Knowledge of falcon weight management
  • Understanding and applying good practice and falconers code of practice
  • Knowledge of food preparation and appropriate falcon food and nutrition
  • Knowledge of Sheikh Zayed hunting trips and sustainable falconry initiatives
  • Knowledge of falcon diseases and how to prevent and treat them
  • Understanding feather molt
  • Understanding and evaluation of appropriate housing for falcons
  • Knowledge of hybrid falcons used in Arabian falconry
  • Advanced knowledge of quarry species and UAE conservation programmes
  • Understanding and using telemetry equipment
  • Knowledge of worldwide falconry organizations
